MHRA, cited pages, small caps

Hi,
I'm working on my MHRA format for humanities, to include full references in footnote citations. My word processor is Microsoft Word 2016.
For citations from multi-volume texts MHRA require me to include a volume number immediately before the page reference. It should look like no.1 in attached image. Although Bookends doesn't allow me to set small caps for the volume within the format itself, reducing the font size by 3 pts in the reference itself seems to have the same effect, and Word seems to treat it as small caps. But for some reason it transfers the same formatting to the p. or pp. added to the cited pages field, as set in the cited pages section of the format; see no 2 in attached image.
Is there something I can add to my format somewhere to prevent the latter, or do I just need to manually reset the volume number to small caps in Word?
My format is as follows: t, $ ed. by $ e $, $j $, $u2$ edn.$ $, $u13$ vols$ (l: u, d) $, $v.
Grateful for any suggestions.
