The trouble with tilde

Excuse me if this has been asked before.

How do I format if I want the URL (or the comma before it) only to appear if the URL-field is filled?

The tutorial informs me:

So I write:
a, t, d, f, v(i~)~|~, S. ~p- |~, `z`

This works fine, if the field is empty: no comma.
But otherwise the URL doesn't show up.

Where is my mistake?

Thank you in advance.

Michael

I'd avoid the tilde, it's difficult to understand and the new "conditional groups" are much more powerful. The $ is also easier to understand

I haven't tested it, but I'd start with something like this

a, t, d, f, v(i), S. p$, z$

You can contact tech support if you can't get exactly what you want and I'll work through it with you.
