Please excuse me if I've missed a way of doing this all ready, but would it be possible to have the colored labels listed under groups/folders? I know that I could easily create smart folders/groups with this but it would be nice to have the labels as for example colored dots for quick access (just like the Mac OS coloured tags in Finder).

Also, would it be possible to have the ability to add more color labels?

I'm not sure what you are asking for. Color labels apply to references only.

You can add more colors in preferences to a maximum of 10 (including black). You can also change the text for color labels to something more meaningful than the name of the color.

Jon, thanks for getting back so quickly! What I mean is that in the sidebar to the left, somewhere above or under all the groups, it would be nice to have the 10 color labels for a really quick access. It is of course possible to get with 10 Smart Groups/Folders, but it would be more aesthetically pleasing with 10 colored dots or similar.

Thanks for explaining. That would consume 10 rows in the groups list for *everyone*, regardless of whether they use color labels or not. We provide a way to add this for the minority of users who want it (as you mentioned, smart groups), although I agree it isn't as pretty.

True, it’s a fair point about the amount of space that I didn’t think of. I guess it could be done with some kind of drop-down or expandable symbol, but you’re right, the demand for this feature might not be that big.
On a half-related note, would it be possible to include font and fontsize options for the entire left sidebar? It would be nice to be able to have much smaller sizes (aka Sente’s style).

I can think about it -- but I was advised against this by the graphic designer who helped design the UI. What do others think?

I'd like font control of the sidebar, as I already use a different, smaller font for the list so currently my sidebar is inconsistent with the list and edit panel (which is what a UI designer would be critical of I assume)...
