Edit reference in standalone window gone?

I really enjoy Bookends 13. I can even live with the new double click although I liked the old one better, because I often edited my references from the library window in a standalone window. As far as I can see this option has gone. You can still select it in Preferences, but you don't get a standalone window and the icon for edit reference is grayed out. Question: am I right (and sorry to see that option gone) or am I missing something and is there still a way to edit references in a standalone window (and how do I get there)?

The standalone window option is still there. Is it possible that the window is opening off screen? With the reference edit window open (you can see it's name in the Windows menu), try Reset Window Position.

Also, double click now opens the PDF display, but pressing Return or Enter sill open the reference window for editing.

Would you consider creating an option to change that double-click behavior? After searching for a reference, I often use the trackpad to select the specific reference I want, and it's easier to double-click to edit than to move from the trackpad to the keyboard. If I want to open the attached PDF, I can click on the attachment icon.

We opened a thread about this before Bookends 13 was released, and having double clicking open or affect PDFs seemed the most asked for

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4378

Clicking on the attachment icon (paper clip) is different, it opens the PDF in another application. Double clicking on a reference now does two different things:

1. Opens the PDF display in Bookends
2. Adds the PDF to the PDF toolbar for quick access

These actions are much more in line with what a double click does in similar apps, like Sente and Papers.

I've decided to make this a preference setting in the next update. The default for a double click is to open the PDF viewer, but you can set it to open the edit pane/window.

Thanks for adding an option for this. I think, though, that you might want to rethink how you get feedback on significant feature changes. I'm a member of this discussion board, and I've been an evangelist for Bookends among my colleagues for over a decade. However, I'm also really busy, as a department chair at a flagship state research university, so I only check this board when I have an issue or problem with Bookends that I need so resolve. I suspect that most serious users of Bookends are like me: we think the product is great, but we don't have time to read the board regularly.

For people like me, opening a thread before a new release doesn't help at all, because we're not on the board as long as the application is working for us. We're only on the board when something goes wrong--such as an unexpected new behavior after a significant upgrade. If you want to get reliable feedback on major UI changes, I'd suggest asking your registered user base to opt into a survey so that you could gauge reactions to a significant change before making it, instead of asking the faithful on the discussion board about changes without considering the users who are so content with your product that they don't see a need to be on the discussion board.

I appreciate your and everyone''s input, but Bookends isn't designed by committee. We won't be doing surveys. I posted the question on the forum because I was interested in the discussion that followed, not the "vote" per se. Frankly, this is not a significant feature change -- it's a minor UI change that aligns Bookends default behavior with other reference management apps. We're not going to reverse it -- but there will be an option to restore the old double click behavior, so everyone should be satisfied.
