Bookends 13: opening the editing pane

A major change appears to have been made in the Bookends UX: although p.63 of the most recent version of the manual states, "To display a particular reference in the editable reference pane, double-click on it or highlight it press Return or Enter," double-clicking no longer appears to open a reference for editing (hitting return still works). Instead, it appears to open the attachment pane.
Why such a fundamental change? Couldn't one just double-click the attachment icon? In addition, double-clicking a reference without an attachment pointlessly opens the attachment pane …
