First, sorry if there is an answer to this in the forum or the manual, or it it should be obvious, but I am not sure what keywords to search for to find it. Maybe it is not a Bookends query in that it is not something that should be done in Bookends, but it is related to using Bookends output.

What is the best way to handle references to articles that have been published in more than one place? For example, a journal article is published in 1950, and then in 1965, it is reprinted as a chapter in a book. Or an article that is published in two journals. Ideally I would give the original journal details, and then add something like, "Reprinted in ...". I could enter two separate references, but I would want to link them. So far I have generally just cited the one I used and ignored the other, which is fine where it is obvious which source is most accessible and I want to cite that, but sometimes it would be better to cite both. A simple solution would be to do it manually in the text as something like "{Smith 1950, #158765}, reprinted as {Smith 1965, #234654}" and then, when the bibliography is compiled, manually editing to merge the two references, but is there a better way of doing it?

If you want each as a separate reference in the library, you can create a metatype that lets you combine elements from each in a formatted output. That is, you can cite the data from the most recent release and then "Reprinted in " and use data from the other reference.

Metatypes aren't hard to use, but they do take a bit of study. The User Guide (Help menu) has all the information you need on how to create and use them. Search for "metatype".

P.S. If that's too much trouble, you could also enter the information for the older version in a user defined field in Bookends and output that information in the standard format you use.
