Dimensions Cross-reference Metrics and Search for Bookends

Post by iandol »

There is a new cross-referencing metrics database available called Dimensions (same developers as ReadCube, incorporating altmetrics):

General Info:
https://www.dimensions.ai/

The search interface:
https://app.dimensions.ai/

It is free for individual use, and it does have an API but details are not immediately available (there is a metrics badge API which does have documentation). Anyway, because of the recent redesign of the Bookends OpenURL interface, we can already integrate dimensions easily into Bookends. You need to add this information into the preferences:

Name: Dimensions Summary
URL: https://badge.dimensions.ai/details/doi/
Query: <doi>

Name: Dimensions DOI Search
URL: https://app.dimensions.ai/discover/publication
Query: ?search_text=<doi>

Name: Dimensions Title Search
URL: https://app.dimensions.ai/discover/publication
Query: ?search_text=<title>

Jon: the metrics JSON API doc is here: https://figshare.com/articles/Dimension ... on/5783694 — worth to ask if they will charge to incorporate this more deeply into Bookends?

Like Altmetrics, it is free for non-commercial use. Given that they denied use of the Altmetrics APIs in Bookend,s I don't imagine they'd do anything different for Dimensions.

This is so short-sighted on their behalf. A reference manager is not a commercial use of their data. Their users are us researchers, and all the ref manager does is to provide a route (just like a web browser) to drive traffic to their data sets. It is in their interest to allow reference managers to access their service because we are the ones who will pressure our institutions to ultimately subscribe to their services (how they really make money). Possibly they are being anti-competitive, in that they want to get people to use ReadCube/Papers?

Anyway, thanks to the OpenURL interface in Bookends, this is somewhat of a moot point 8)

I totally agree! Please feel free (and any others who feel the same) to write and request they open the API to Bookends (they have a contact widget at this URL)
