Work collaboratively on a library

I am starting a book project with a fellow scholar and we wonder whether it is possible to collaboratively work (both adding items, for instance) in a safe way on a single library in, say, a shared dropbox folder.

Are there any measures to prevent concurrent access to a single library item?

Or would it better that one of the authors just provides his papers as an import file to the second author who maintains the library? The first author, then, would use the library in a passive way (drag&drop of citations to his part of the text).

Thanks for any insight.

Cheers

The second way is completely safe, although a bit more work. The first may be safe, but there can be problems -- for example, "collisions" when you both work with a library and it comes time to sync -- Dropbox will report a problem. There is a third possibility. Create an Apple ID without a credit card attached and set up iCloud sync on both computers. Now you can both access the same data, which is synced via the cloud (not file upload/download as with Dropbox, but atomic sync of just the data that are changed).
