Export to text?

Post by dtoub »

Very seriously considering moving from EndNote. But I need the ability to select a few references and export the citations as a group to text like RTF. Is that possible with Bookends? Thanks.

Sure, that's simple. Normally you'd scan a document to create the bibliography (and final citations), but it's easy to do manually. There are two ways to do this, but since they converge I'll give you the most direct way.

1. Check (mark) the references you want to export (Find for them, select the ones you want and check ONE of them with the Shift key down, etc.)
2. Biblio -> Bibliography -> Styled Text
3. Select the format you want (e.g. APA 6th, Nature, etc.).
4. Click Make Bib.

The exported bibliography will either be sent to the Bibliography Window (from where it can be copy/pasted or Saved) or To Disk, depending on your choice. Since you chose Styled Text, anything written to disk is RTF.

If you're after something different just ask.

Thanks-very helpful. That worked. The only things that gives me pause (and keep in mind, your software is just so much better than Endnote, they would be totally embarrassed if they actually seemed to care) are two things:
  • Comparing the same pubmed search with the same terms yielded 85 items with Bookends but 102 with the same search in ENX8
  • Nearly all of the items I imported from the EN search had attachments that EN could download and attach, but Bookends only found one attachment
Will keep testing and that will help me decide. Thanks so much!

Would you please give an example of a search that gave different numbers of hits on PubMed (it's actually PubMed that decides what's a hit or not, Bookends and EN may construct the search a bit differently -- I'm curious as to what the browser-based PubMed search finds).

As for getting the PDFs, that's dependent on a number of things, including the publisher. Would you please contact support@sonnysoftware.com with examples so I can see why a particular PDF wasn't found? We have to tailor this for each publisher, and small changes they make can break previously working code. You'll often see in our release notes something to the effect that "changes were make in the importing function to deal with changes made by PubMed/Google Scholar/JSTOR/etc.". Also note that there is more than one way to search and obtain PDFs in Bookends. If you use Bookends Browser to search PubMed, for example, you can import any PDF you have institutional privileges to read, regardless of publisher. It always works.
