Sorting by Date (various styles)

Post by tf8686 »

I've recently integrated over from Sente 6 into Bookends. Sente 6 recognized dates regardless of format (Sept 6 2018, 2018-09-06, 2018-06-09, 6 Sept 2018), and could be manipulated and changed as I saw fit.

When I converted my library into Bookends, the date references are in this format: September 6 2018

I am an historian, and often work by date, so this format (as I understand bookends thus far) doesn't sort well. Is there a way to make the date on my references universal as it was on Sente 6, or is this not possible? Do I have to convert every single date manually to a 2018-09-06 format in order to do this? When I use citations, I use a 6 September 2018 format, but this format doesn't seem to be conducive for sorting in Bookends, as I understand it. Any advice here?

Thank you!

The Bookends date field is simply alphanumeric (i.e. it doesn't know the contents are a date). So there's no way to automatically change the contents to a different format. In the column list view you can have Bookends show the year only, and if you choose that column to sort the list will be ordered by year, ignoring month and day (which is satisfactory for most uses).
