I enjoy the Mac version of the app: I create smart groups based on tags, I can highlight the PDFs and it supports iCloud. I can’t say the same for the iOS version, though. Currently it’s just a list of the papers I have on my library. I understand that Smart Groups cannot be synced between platforms, but even creating them is different. Aren’t the tags synced between devices? Because this is the way I use Smart Groups on my Mac.

If you mean PDF file tags, those aren't stored in the database so they are not synced. They are stored in the PDFs themselves.
