I am wondering if Bookends can support a shortcut to hide the "group panel" on the left of the interface.

No, pretty much the whole UI is geared around the concept of groups, if you hide it you'd become lost.

You can make it very narrow if you like by grabbing and sliding the right edge, but you can't make it invisible.
