I wonder if anyone has experience with using the reference types 'archive' and 'archival document' and has modified it to suit the purpose? At the moment there are some fields that do not apply, like journal.

I am trying to find out how best to do it. Jon, are you by any chance working on this? If not, shall i send you some suggestions later? I am a historian so i might come up with something handy..

We don't supply such Types, so you must be creating them yourself. You can contact me directly if you have problems/suggestions.

This is most embarassing, i indeed created them when i bought the program and then forgot about it... So just thought when i saw it this afternoon that it came with the package..

I will share once i have some time to really look into it. If i remember well Procite used to have a reference type for 'archive' and even 'archival document' so i will base it on those.

Jon, would you be interested in the result? I think these ref types might be good to convince historians to start using Bookends.

Thanks, Gerben! Please take your time. I'll look forward to seeing what you've come up with. I'm an historian, but I haven't put Bookends to use for my archival sources yet. I'll contribute my experiences when I do try.

Hello,

Just picking up an old thread. Since i lost my custom formats after a system reinstall i am again looking at creating two formats for "archive" and "archival document".

It occurred to me that the way in which one cites from an archive is very much like the way in which one cites from an edited book. In that sense, an archival document is comparable to a book chapter. Which brings me to my real question: would it be an idea to have a format "archive" (based on edited book) and have a function "replicate as archival document" similar to the "replicate as book chapter" function that was implemented a while ago? This would save a lot of time in inputting data.

I don't have any ideas for you but as a budding historian I'm also interested in what you come up with.

So far, I have restricted BE to my secondary bibliography and have created FileMaker databases to handle my archival sources... I'm also using Scribe (which has a very attractive new version) to organize my notes - on both primary & secondary sources - for papers/chapters.

I ho[pe you may be able to share with us your way referencing sources taken from archives

This is what I came up with until now (see the images below), two reference types called Archive and Archival Document.

I have based these two ref types upon Edited Book & Book Chapter. That means that when I want to add an archival document to the db I can do it like this:
1) find archive reference in the db
2) temporarily change ref type of archive to Edited Book and hit Replicate As Book Chapter
3) I have a new reference and change the type of this new reference to Archival Document to further fill it in
4) change the reference type for original reference back from Edited Book to Archive

Of course my secret hope is that one day Jon will delight us historians with these ref typs built in, including the replicate as option

Archival document

I am considering switching from my current Filemaker database of archival material to BE. It'd be very helpful if you have some time to expand on how BE fits in your research workflow. (Such as: do you take notes in BE? how do you retrieve the material? do you have one database for biblio, another for primary sources?)
