How to sort by date (month, day) and not just year?

I figured the format "2023-06” would work but it does not.

Neither does “Aug 2023.”

Any way to sort using chars outside the four YYYY ones?

I assume you mean in the reference list.

It uses an alphanumeric sort, meaning it sorts on the content in the column.

If you want to sort on the entire date, check "Show entire date" in the Lists tab in Settings. As long as the dates are entered in some systematic fashion like 2023-10-20 it will work as you like. But dates containing letters, such as the month, won't.
