Apple Intelligence/Writing Tools Tips

Post by Jon »

Now that Writing Tools are available, I thought a sticky thread containing user-contributed tips might be useful. The most intriguing of the tools is Compose, which taps into ChatGPT for open-form questions/responses. Here are two interesting applications I've discovered.

1. Insert an arbitrary analysis of a PDF into Notes. (1) Right-click in a reference's empty Notes field, (2) select Writing Tools and then Compose, (3) click the + button and select Document, (4) choose a PDF, and (5) type "summary". The response will be inserted into Notes. You could also ask for a critique, a review, or select from options offered by ChatGPT.

2. Import reference metadata (authors, title, etc.) from a PDF that has no unique identifier. (1) Select all text in the PDF (Command-A), (2) use Writing Tools -> Compose, (3) type "extract metadata as ris", (4) click Copy, and (5) File -> Import References -> Import from File or Clipboard (Command-I) using the RIS filter.
