"et al." for editors?

I have a reference type called "Edited Book Chapter", used to cite a chapter of an edited book: I use "author" field for the author and "editor" field for the book's editor/s.
When the book editors are more than 3, my required format (and common sense) says I should write only the first one and then "et al.".

Now, I could get the auto "et al." feature work in "author" field, but not in "editor". Bookends' User Guide says it "does not apply to the names of editors" (p. 124).

Is there any workaround to get this automatically done? (or perhaps I am missing something?...)

No, sorry, et al. only applies to authors. You'll have to insert et al. manually in cases with editors that meet that criterion.

Although I have participated in editing a 5-editor volume and therefore would be interested in always having all the editor's names spelled out I think this might be not exactly a common case, but also not particularly rare…

I too think this would be a good implementation for the future. In SBL style any book with more than three authors receives 'et al' in the footnote, but all of the authors are written out in the Bib.

This is true for editors and authors? What I'm getting at (all), is if the rules (where and when et al. is inserted) that apply to authors also apply to editors (when both use et al.).

At least I can say in German publications this is not unusual. And yes, it follows the same rules as for authors.

It is also suggested in "The Chicago Manual of Style" (Chicago - London 2003), to be used when editors are more than 3.
