IDnumbers and filing systems

I'm a new user, another abandoning EN. But again, my files and PDfs
are identified by the EN record number. I have read serveral (3 or 4) of
the previous discussions on th subject. I have sucessfully imported with the EN record numbers, so that the past is taken care of. However, I still agree with some others that an ascending but fixed number system would be nice.
I do NOT mean that the Unique ID should be ascending, just that one
of the other fields could be. I am for the moment simply typing an ascending number into one of the user fields. It sorts quite well numeric=alphanumeric as long as your numbers are already over 1000.
OK what's my question? I'm sure the answers no, but is there any way to get the field to index itself?
One other small issue. There seems to be a width limitation on each field in the list view. I have a nice wide screen and I would like to see a lot of the title. Is there any way around this?
thanks...
