Trying to add a citation but error message

When I try to add a citation to my text in Word, I get the following error message:
Microsoft Visual basic: Run-time error '5'
Invalid procedure call or argument
with choices
continue, end, debug and help.
I'm using Mac OX 10.3.9
My word is Office 2004.
I have chosen Word as my word processor in the preferences in bookends as well as linked all my references by choosing word in the linking box.
I have the bookends toolbar in word.
What should I do?
Thanks for your help!

Hi,
This is probably not occuring when you add a citation, but when you try to scan, right? There is a discussion of this Finder bug (it's not a Bookends or a Word error) in the Read Me, with several solutions offered. Please take a look and see if that helps.

As per Read Me, I am now able to use references if I open the database rather than click on the actual program. However, when I scan the document, using the toolbar, Word automatically launches a second copy of bookends. First time, I crashed my Apple for the first time ever. Now the two copies seem to be peacefully coexisting.
Do you think this will be a problem?
Some more silly problems:
i) When I insert a citation into a footnote, I will still have to use insert footnote function in word, no? Or is there a way to automatically make citations in text into footnotes?
ii) where do I put the page numbers?
Sorry for these newbie questions. I have never used a reference program before, and think a course might have been a very good idea. But as it is, I am trying to figure it out for myself, with your generous help.
Thanks!

Yes, could be a problem. You should only have one version of Bookends on your hard disk.
Yes, you do need to use Word's footnote function (Bookends doesn't generate a Word footnote for you, Word has to do it).
Page numbers? You mean in a citation? At the end, usually, using the Cited Pages feature (see User Guide):
{Smith, 2006, whatever@12-15}

The two copies of Bookends (one opened via database, one opened automatically when scanned document) crashed my computer a couple of times. Now, however, Bookends opens using the Word toolbar... and there are no problems anymore with error messages.
Go figure.
Problems solved for now.
Will be back with more newbie questions later am sure.
Thanks very much for your help!
