Sort order in Bibliography?

Apologies if this has come up before, but I have a question regarding how entries in the Bibliography are sorted. I'm using the APA 5th edition format (modified by myself to make it correspond to the APA manual--the one that comes with BE 9.0.4 is slightly off). I need entries sorted by authors, then date. It seems, however, that it's sorting authors based on how they're entered in the database rather than how they're printed in the Bibliography. Being a bit lazy, I don't make all of my authors the same, some may be entered as "Lovelace, CT" and others may be "Lovelace, C. T.", or "Lovelace, Christopher T." If I have the same author entered differently in different refs., BE may sort them incorrectly in the Bibl. It seems odd that BE would sort based on how something is entered in the database, given that the Bibl. sort order is defined by how names are printed there.
Is there a way to make BE sort Bibl. entries based on how names are printed in the Bibl., not how they're entered in the database?
Many thanks.
