Attachments Folder

Is it possible to sub-divide the attachments folder into sub-folders (eg, scans, pdfs etc) whilst still maintaining the attachment link? At present if I use sub folders BE offers to move the file to the 'dedicated attachments folder'.

Hi Tacitus,
Yes, you can have another level of folders underneath the default attachments folder. You can create the folders yourself in the Finder, or have Bookends create them for you (note that in the "Do you want to attach..." dialog box there is a popup menu, the last option of which is always "New Subfolder".

Thanks Jon that does work.
Actually it would be nice to have another level for the following reason - which may just be me, but others might find it convenient.
At present I divide the attachments by archive with a subfolder for the archive ref and then individual scans which may be of a multi-page doc. thus we have the form: Attachments/Nat Archive/CAB123-123-11/CAB123-123-1-1(xx).jpg etc There are other folders for pdfs, text files and so on.
I suppose I could print the scans as pdfs and concatenate them to single files, but it's easier to just dump the scans from the camera into folders as above.

Hi Jon
When attachments are stored in subfolders of the selected Bookends attachment folder (default or otherwise) does the attachment link in a reference survive Bookends upgrades
Thanks Robr

They should. If you find otherwise, contact me directly and we'ss look into it.

book covers

Is there any way to get the book covers from Amazon all into a graphics sub-folder automatically? The subject sub-folders are kind of difficult to find in the Finder because of the large number of graphics clogging up the root attachments folder.

No, not really. When you manually attach a file you can select a subfolder, but when downloading from Amazon they go to the root folder. You can manually move them whenever you want to a subfolder and the link won't be lost, though.

That's good to know. Can any attachment be moved round freely then?

Anywhere? No. In a subfolder in the attachments folder, yes.
Bookends remembers any folder you have ever put an attachment in and will look into it as part of the search chain. But I strongly advise you stick to the attachments folder/subfolders. It will save you problems in the long run.
Also note that as of 9.0.5 or so you can have Bookends Copy rather than Move attachments to these folders. So you can keep the file whereever you want, but let let Bookends put a *copy* in the attachments folder.
