Indeed, that did the trick. The font was Lucida Grande without italics. Actually, I cannot remember that I changed that but... it seems I did. Sorry for bothering you with my own mistakes.

I am trying to modify a reference format by italicizing the author names. To achieve that I did select the "a" (for author) and set it to italicize. However, Bookends does not recognize this change and still shows the authors names in normal case (but it recognizes when I set the a to bold...
