Italics in format output

Post by Neil »

Hopefully I'm posting this on the right forum.

I am trying to follow the OSCOLA format for legal citation, and have created a custom format within Bookends to achieve this. Part of the OSCOLA format is that certain elements are italicised.

For example, a book reference:

Gilder Telecosm: How Infinite Bandwidth Will Revolutionize Our World (Simon & Schuster 2000)

Within a reference, I can apply a style to the relevant field entry (e.g. selecting the Title and Command + i to italicise it), but that requires me to remember to do so on each occasion.

I have a custom format, with field order:

Code: Select all

a t (u u2 d)
and, ideally, I would be able to specify that "t" should be returned italicised.

I am not sure if this is possible? Or if I am approaching the problem in the best way?

Any thoughts welcomed.

Select the t in the format and italicize it -- now all refs of that Type will have the title italicized. Do not do it in the reference itself.

Select the t in the format an italicize it
How embarassing — I didn't think to try that! Thank you :)

I am trying to modify a reference format by italicizing the author names. To achieve that I did select the "a" (for author) and set it to italicize. However, Bookends does not recognize this change and still shows the authors names in normal case (but it recognizes when I set the a to bold). What I am doing wrong?

Using version 12.1.2

Does the bib font AND whatever font the author names are in (check the actual reference to make sure what font is used for the authors) have an italic face?

Thanks for your swift reply. To answer your question: I believe so because I have set it to Arial.

The font in the format is irrelevant. It's the font in the *reference* author field and default font (set in preferences).

But I can already see that the author's font is different from that in, say, the title. So the reference is no doubt the problem. There are several ways to deal with this. The best global way to do it is to use

Refs -> Restore Default Font and Style

to all references in the database. Unless you have added italics or bold to reference data, this will do what you want.

Indeed, that did the trick. The font was Lucida Grande without italics. Actually, I cannot remember that I changed that but... it seems I did. Sorry for bothering you with my own mistakes.
