Re: Web of Science results panel

Hi Jon,

Thanks for making that change! I tried that and I'm afraid I still get the same behavior. The version I got from the download page has a Web of Science file that is dated 6/14/08; could it be the updated version isn't there yet?

Re: Web of Science results panel

Hi Jon, Our library uses a nonstandard proxy server, which works by changing the web site's URL and tracking users with cookies. So I can't connect to the Web of Science z39.50 server from off campus using a proxy server; web is the only option for proxy service. (We also have access to campus using...

Web of Science results panel

Hi, I tried using the new import-from-browser functionality, but ran into a bit of a snag. I'm able to connect to Web of Science using the Bookends browser and perform a search, but when the results come back the frame (or table cell?) with the results is empty. Performing the identical searches in ...

Jon,

First, for Bookends to behave intuitively, it _should_ care what the surrounding formatting is. Second, Bookends should not change the formatting of text that is not part of a citation as a side-affect of formatting.

Hi Jon, Thanks for the quick reply. I now understand what you're saying in the manual. I'd recommend changing this in the next release. I can understand that it's a judgment call whether an inserted citation should have the formatting of the surrounding text or the default for the style. (I think it...

Word italic formatting bug

Hi, I'm formatting a Word document with a number of paragraphs that are formatted in a style whose font is italic, but which contain text that has been converted to non-italic, e.g.: " This is the header of the paragraph. The paragraph now goes on with the italics turned off. The paragraph cont...

Surname collisions

I think there's one more problem with the APA bibliographic style, and I don't see how to fix it. Suppose you have two citations by authors with the same last name but different first names, e.g.: "Here are two papers by people with the same last name (Miller, 1956a; Miller and Cohen, 2001). Re...

OCLC PsycInfo import

Hi Jon et al., A couple questions about importing from OCLC PsycInfo: * The OCLC PsycInfo filter distributed with Bookends 8 clips off most of the abstracts. Telling the filter that fields end with Return followed by any valid tag appears to fix the problem. Any reason not to keep this change? * Usi...

Bibliography sorting

I'm formatting a large document in APA 5th edition style. The style manual specifies that the reference list should be alphabetized, and that option is checked in the format dialog, but the reference list is being inserted in what appears to be a random order. Anyone else run into this?

Hi Jon, That seems like a good idea. In the meantime, is there any way to clean up a large number of names? This database has > 2000 entries, so doing it by hand is not an option. The misformatted authors pretty much make Bookends unusable for me, because when I format a bibliography (in APA style) ...

Importing records with authors formatted as "First M. L

Hi, I am trying to switch over from EndNote. I exported my EndNote database as XML and imported it into Bookends. It worked surprisingly well, except that names formatted as "First M. Last" retain that order on import. This works fine in EndNote, but I see from the Bookends documentation, ...
