Web of Science results panel

Post by jzacks »

Hi,

I tried using the new import-from-browser functionality, but ran into a bit of a snag. I'm able to connect to Web of Science using the Bookends browser and perform a search, but when the results come back the frame (or table cell?) with the results is empty. Performing the identical searches in Safari works fine. Any ideas.

Hi,

That's because Javascript is turned off (for compatibility issues at other sites). Is there some reason you're not doing the search of WOS using the Bookends direct search method (assuming you have ip authentication)? That is faster, and you'll be able to get to the reference in the Bookends browser by double-clicking on the references you find.

Hi Jon,

Our library uses a nonstandard proxy server, which works by changing the web site's URL and tracking users with cookies. So I can't connect to the Web of Science z39.50 server from off campus using a proxy server; web is the only option for proxy service. (We also have access to campus using a Cisco VPN; that's less convenient but I can use it.)

It's possible that I could enable JavaScript on a site-specific basis (e.g. allow for WOS, disable for JSTOR, where it causes problems). I'll think about that...

In the meantime, the VPN solution should work, at least.

Please download Bookends 10.3.1 again. JavaScript should be enabled for WOS now and you can access the articles directly in the Bookends browser.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for making that change! I tried that and I'm afraid I still get the same behavior. The version I got from the download page has a Web of Science file that is dated 6/14/08; could it be the updated version isn't there yet?

The filter hasn't changed, Bookends has. When you navigate to WOS via Bookends browser, Javascript should be enabled.

Please contact me directly for tech support if it's not working for you (support@sonnysoftware.com).
