Re: Handbase on ipad
Thanks for the info on the iPad, it is still not available here but I am interested in its use as a PDF reader. The iPhone screen is too small for this purpose. In my opinion, reference format generation in Bookends and database generation in HanDBase are uncomplicated. Different users are likely to...

Re: Handbase on ipad
HanDBase is a capable program that can handle large databases. I tested it on an iPhone 3GS with a >10000 records Bookends database and it run smoothly and searches were very fast. Keep in mind that the program has the following limitations: No Unicode support Field length limits: 254 characters in ...

Re: Preferred Fonts
Related to the choice of fonts: How about free selection of the fontsize? A combo box in place of the static popup menu would allow to enter a user preferred fontsize (in Preferences/General, Preferences/Concise View). As for Menu/Font, I have never used it and Menu/Style only to designate italics/b...

Re: anyone else seen cases where command-shift-O doesn't work?
The shortcut works as long as the selected reference has focus in list view. If the highlight color is gray (focus lost) because you clicked into a field in the right panel or the attached PDF then the shortcut will not work.

Re: Bookends attachments folder and DevonThink database
Bookends is not scriptable, DEVONthink is. So you cannot automate the creation of a new record in Bookends. Eventually future versions of Bookends will be scriptable. The chance for this will increase with the number of users asking for it. As for the location of the attachments, maybe Jon can let y...

Re: Bookends attachments folder and DevonThink database
No idea if that is possible and I also do not have the Office version to test the scanning but you could try to automate the task using applescript. The following script is a simple demonstration and works only if you have a single attachment folder (no subfolders). It is also necessary to have the ...
Re: notecards
Actually the discussion about external NOTE files is superfluous as such files can be created in any application and attached to Bookends references already. Alternatively, a clickable URI to any file can be entered (pasted) for example in the notes field. In the latter case the user is free in resp...

You are welcome. I forgot to mention that in System Preferences/Universal Access the check box 'Enable access for assistive devices' must be checked. Also please be aware that this script is using 'User Interface' scripting. It may fail if your computer is busy running tasks that cause heavy process...

Re: List view enhancement requests
There are several things I would like to request to enhance the list view and maximize the use of screen space in Bookends. 4) The shortcut key (command>option>I) both opens and closes the info pane, which is great. But could you make the list view window adjust itself so it all fits on the screen?...

Re: Open URL and open URL search
Personally, I would prefer a mechanism that allows users to create their 'own' URLs for specific searches. These URLs could be created as specific reference formats and then referred to by their name in the Bookends File/Open URL... menu. As Danzac suggested, this menu should become hierarchical and...

I meant a situation when you have all the citation information except for the DOI. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Your hint has been very useful! The crossref service at: http://www.crossref.org/freeTextQuery/ allowed to paste a list of 46 formatted references from Bookends and found a few DOIs th...

Why using a third party website, just put your DOI behinddanzac wrote:- I would also suggest a DOI lookup tool, using the CrossRef lookup (http://www.crossref.org/guestquery/). Basically, you plug in the info, and CrossRef retrieves the DOI (if there is one).
http://dx.doi.org/
and let them resolve it.

The 'manual delete' dialog is useless if you have preliminary, manually edited references, this would include attachments. The dialog should show two references side by side with the differences indicated in red color and it should allow to copy/paste (drag/drop) text and move attachments between th...
