Thanks again, the logic is clear to me now.
As I suspected BE and Sente logic are opposite: in Sente nesting searches means drilling down in one's references and narrowing down the results. So it takes a moment to get used to how BE does it.
Best wishes,
Gerben

Re: can nested smart groups inherit the criteria of their parent smart groups?
Thanks very much for the quick reply. [/quote] It's hierarchical. The boolean logic applies to the selected group and its children -- it doesn't apply to the group's parents. I am not sure I understand correctly, please bear with me for a moment. Right now this is the situation: there are two smart ...

can nested smart groups inherit the criteria of their parent smart groups?
I am trying to nest smart groups in smart groups, but in such a way that the nested group only returns results that also abide by the criterium for the "parent" smart group. Example: • I create a smart group for all references with keyword "Germany" • nested inside this smart gro...

I certainly did
Assigned a keyboard shortcut to Global Change > Change Field, worked pretty fast that way.

Re: convert group names to keywords
Thanks for the suggestion. After realizing I had less groups and subgroups than I thought (still around 100) I ended up manually going through all the groups and assigning keywords to the references (after flattening the group hierarchy). Took a couple of hours but worth the effort!

convert group names to keywords
I wonder if there is any way to convert group names (semi)automatically to keywords, if need be by manipulating an export file?
I need to import references into a different system and would like to avoid manually going through all the groups and assigning keywords to the refs.
Best,
Gerben

scanning from multiple databases
I find it increasingly difficult to manage my 7000+ database (too many groups and subgroups to maintain a good overview, especially on a 13" Macbook) and started to break it up in smaller topical databases. This is of course perfectly workable except for the moment when you want to do a scan an...

Re: Could not import FormatLib since updating to 10.5.4
Same problem here with 10.5.7:
- open upon launch never works
- double clikcing a db the first time gives the error, the second time not
- idem for opening from menu

Re: Nested folders
That's quite explicit already, thanks. I understand this might be pretty complicated to implement and that without some strong user demand it's not high on the list. FWYW, I personally think it would be much more than "nice to have" and really makes a difference with managing refs. But I s...

Re: Nested folders
Jon, just wanted to ask, is there any chance this will arrive in the (foreseeable) future? Or is it not in the cards?
I am considering to start using Papers in addition to Bookends so I can used nested collections but of course would prefer to stick to BE and one program.

Gerben

Re: notecards
Just adding some thoughts here: I generally don't mind using several dedicated apps for tasks if they do 'their thing' really well. So while the idea of BE becoming also a note taking app I wonder if it would not be equally fruitful to focus energy on integrating BE with a note taking app like Slipb...
Re: notecards
Just one suggestion, use Slipbox: http://www.markusguhe.net/slipbox/
Fine note taking app and very easy linking to BE references

syncing 2 dbs but only specific groups
I have one large database containing all my references. I would like to create a topical database now that only contains groups from the 'master' db that are relevant to a particular project I am working on. My problem is that I always add new refs to the master db and would like to keep the topical...
