One thing for those affected to try is rebooting in Safe mode (Shift key held down). See if Bookends launches now without the error message. Then reboot normally.

It was a clue, and tells us that the error is spurious. If the library really could not be opened, Bookends would be unable to format references (you'd get the error message whenever you tried).

But is there a way to get open-on-launch working again?

That's what I'm trying to do. If I could reproduce the problem, that would help.

I just did this. It didn't change anything.

Same problem here with 10.5.7:
- open upon launch never works
- double clikcing a db the first time gives the error, the second time not
- idem for opening from menu
