This is a very long thread and I'm sorry but I didn't read all of it. But I just wanted to add my 2 cents:

1. I bought Bookends recently but have not started using it.

2. why? i really need a notes field and a call number field to finally switch from endnote. i bought it hoping those will come ...

just to note... this was extremely confusing to me too. all i wanted to do was export to xml all (of the 50 trial) references to try with jfile companion beta.

but all i saw was Export (hits) in the menu. i then went to the manual, and searched for export. no help there. then searched for hits. no ...

looking at this beta... tried (erroneously, my fault) to select bookends database file (not xml). beta crashed.

edit: i then exported Bookends 8 file (the only xml options being for endnote), and tried opening that in JFC. also crashed. now i'm not sure what i'm supposed to export/import.

yes i'm working on a book, so yes, the old record #s i think would be important to preserve.

Then what happens if you have both Notes and Call numbers? which would be prioritized? or would call number get tacked on to the end of notes?

As far as refer format -- that doesn't seem like it would because (I think) I would need the unique ID to match with the existing documents with EndNote ...

That's correct. We do have an isbn field, but nothing for call numbers. You can reassign one of the others if you want, or put the call number into a scrolling field, like Notes. There was a thread not too long ago with a some of people who found the number of fields in Bookends limiting. It's ...

with regards to #1, I just noticed form admittedly a quick look that the connection possibilities were very limited. I suppose I can try to see if I can get it to work with the institutions I use, which are not included.
