Hi! After some 18 months I'm returning to this thread. Sometime after my last post, I bought Bookends. But I have not yet actually used it in part due to some of the same concerns. I am about to get busy on a major new project, and was looking in to switching again. Happily I notice that there is now a call number field and it imports correctly from EndNote XML! Thanks! (or was it me that put it in there some time ago and have forgotten?)
I also notice that "notes" and "research notes" fields are merged, with the latter following the former. I can live with that but it would be nice at least if there were some separation put between them. <cr>---<cr> or something would work. "Notes" is normally what comes from on-line catalogs, while "research notes" are my own notes.
Although I realize you can get an extended version of the scrolling field by clicking on the button, In practice this is an extra step. I use the notes (really now the research notes) in endnote a lot, and it's more important than abstract. I really wish for a bit of an interface redesign, with notes given at least as much or more space than abstract at the bottom, call number on the main window, some of the user fields moved to the drawer.
Now a couple of random things not in the orignal thread.
I'm not thrilled by the way Bookends stores journal volume & issue in one field as volume(issue), but it seems to format fine, so not really a problem. I just wonder if it would also export them separately?
What's with the vCard export format? It seems it might be a nice way to get records onto an iPod. Anyone try this?
Also, how would I make a call number format to export a text list like:
call number: author, title
Finally, has anyone seen the new PDF manager, Papers? Any thoughts about integration with that?
thanks!

The call number field was added quite a while ago, actually (version 8 I believe). And Bookends will import it from an EndNote XML file.
Bookends will be getting a UI overhaul, but it will be part of a major upgrade. For now, realize that you can use the Notes tab in the Info Drawer (the drawer associated with the List View) to read and create notes. This can be enlarged pretty much as you like.I use the notes (really now the research notes) in endnote a lot, and it's more important than abstract. The format lets you export the volume and issue separately (check OFF "include issue number with volume", and use "i" (without the quotes) to indicate the issue number).I'm not thrilled by the way Bookends stores journal volume & issue in one field as volume(issue), but it seems to format fine, so not really a problem. I've tried it...
The User Guide has lots of useful info about creating formats. Basically, the Order field would containAlso, how would I make a call number format to export a text list like:

We have already done it. Alex (at mekentisj) and I put together a plug-in that adds this menuFinally, has anyone seen the new PDF manager, Papers? Any thoughts about integration with that?
Export -> Send To Bookends
to the Papers File menu. It sends the reference to Bookends, along with a link to the pdf (which becomes a Bookends attachment). It is shipping as a default with Papers 1, I believe.
