While I suppose it is possible, I think that unnecessarily complicates the interface. Simple and understandable are good, and having fields change their meaning via a menu of key combination would be unintuitive and confusing, IMO.

Honestly, I think it would be a very difficult interface to manage. There's no elegant way you could have two splitters on the same horizontal plane *and* allow them to close all the way *and* allow the middle pane to be closed while keeping the other two open. It won't work.

Esp. since they have key commands for opening them, I find the Notes and Keywords Tabs helpful for a variety of things. In particular, in certain Groups, I like to skim through the keywords or notes to see if something stands out to me when I'm working on a project.

Hi, I can see how that's a pain, but I don't see adding something so highly specific and limited. If you are at a UC school, have you contacted the library to ask why they do this, and perhaps more to the point could the more common names be provided.
