Thanks to Jon from tech support. I had the wrong key combination. Command-Y switches back to my word processor and inserts the temporary citation. Command-Option-Y, which I was using, switches back to my word processor without copying the citation.

I'm a new user having trouble getting Bookends to insert a temporary citation into the document I'm working on in Scrivener.
