empty 'new document' after scanning in word 2008

Post by martinz »

Hi. I've so far been very happy w/ Bookends – I read the manual, ran some little tests, tried scanning shorter documents just to see how it works. All was well. So in the process of writing, I've built up a larger database. Now today, I tried scanning a larger document for the first time (Word 2008, document saved as .doc, 68 pages, many many citations, roughly 30 sources). It looks like everything is going according to plan, but when Bookend has Word create a new document in which to place the scanned text, that document just remains empty, and that's the end of it. I've played around for hours, literally, but can't figure out what is going on here. This doesn't seem to make sense, and (like all things that don't seem to make sense) is rather infuriating. Especially since I have a chapter to submit and was counting on this to work.
I've looked around in the forum, but couldn't find a thread that describes this problem. Any advice very much appreciated (or pointers to the proper thread).
Thanks,
Martin

This is probably due to a buggy Word. Sometimes it stops receiving the AppleEvents Bookends sends it. To see if this is the case, just do a Paste into the empty document. Does the scanned doc appear? If so, that solves the problem. To get Word to respond normally again, a reboot usually does it.

If that's not the problem, you should contact tech support for help.

it seems that the clipboard is empty after the scanning process – pasting into a new document does not produce anything (tried it in other applications such as textedit, too). also, after the scanning process, the 'show clipboard' command in bookends shows an empty box. the odd thing is that the scanning works just fine with shorter documents.
are there any known components in a .doc file that interfere with bookends' scanning function?
sorry, did you suggest i contact bookends' tech support or msword's (i'd rather not..)?
thanks for the response!

The Bookends view clipboard would be empty because it only shows text, not RTF.
