Journler link in a Bookends notecard (and DOIs)

Post by rickl »

In one of my Bookends items, a notecard contains the following text:
journler://entry/42

I'm embarrassed to admit that I don't remember how I got that in there. It clearly is supposed to take me to an entry in Journler but simply double-clicking on the text doesn't do anything, and no options appear when I Control-Click. Does anyone know how I activate this link?

On a related note (I think), I notice that URL fields have 2 buttons alongside. One opens the URL in a large window for editing, while the @ field takes you to the site in a browser. But DOI fields only have the edit button. Is there any way to jump easily to an article online when you have a DOI but not a URL?

After posting the previous message, I noticed that the journler://entry/42 text is recognized as a hyperlink in Safari and takes me to a specific Journler entry that refers to the bibliographic entry in Bookends. In Bookends, if I add the same text to a URL field and click on the @, Bookends opens the relevant Journler entry for me. I guess if I always added such Journler links to the URL field that would solve the problem, but I need the URL field for web URLs so that wouldn't really be workable.

I'm probably conflating too many different things in this thread, but when entering DOIs does it matter whether you include the http://dx.doi.org/ bit before the numbers?

Hi,

The problem here is that the URI doesn't contain one or more periods, which Bookends uses to confirm it is a read URL (which this isn't). In the next Bookends update this restriction will be lifted, and the URI you posted will appear in a contextual menu you can select from.

No, you don't need to add http:dx.doi.org/ before a doi in the doi field -- Bookends will do that for you (right-click in the doi field that has a legitimate doi (beginning with 10.) and you'll see correct URL in the contextual menu.

Oh, that's a nice feature. For "you don't need to…", I guess I should read "it's best not to…"?

It sounds like the next update is going to be a dream come true. Would it make sense to have multiple URL fields?

Right, you shouldn't put anything in the doi field except the doi itself.

You can put multiple URLs in the URL field now (click on the name to get the enlarged view and enter them) and select the one you want with a right-click. And you can put URLs in any field, actually, and select them with a right-click. So in essence, you can associate an unlimited number of URLs with a reference.

Thanks for the clarification. It's quite a bit more flexible and powerful than I had realised.

A quick warning/tip for other users from a recent experience of mine: some of the journal sites show a DOI as a clickable link, the link displayed starting with 10. However, when you right-click to copy the link, it includes the http: bit which you then need to delete to get it recognized as a DOI. Probably better just to do a straight copy of the DOI text on display.
