Hi Jon,

That doesn't really work optimally for me. If I have the reference selected in list view and I drag the PDF icon (from Safari or from the Bookends Browser), Bookends offers to attach the PDF to the selected reference and appears to do so, but the reference still shows up as having no attachment. The file has been downloaded and filed correctly, so I can remedy the situation by navigating to the PDF in the Finder and dragging it to the reference again, at which point the attachment shows up properly associated with the reference.

If I doubleclick on the relevant reference to open it in the reference view and drag the PDF icon (from Safari or from the Bookends Browser) to that window, Bookends simply offers to attach the PDF icon itself as an image.

Am I doing something wrong?

Hi,

Please rebuild the database (or try a fresh database). Remember, the pdf proxy icon will download and attach whatever is in the browser window. If it is a pdf (in the WebKit viewer), it downloads the pdf. If it is a web page, it downloads and attaches that (as a .webarchive). If this still isn't working as expected, then please contact us directly for tech support.

OK, I get it now. I was dragging the little PDF icons from windows such as this directly, without loading the PDF in the window:

It works as expected when I do as you instruct.

Interesting, though, that it would almost work when I do as I was doing before. If that actually became fully functional, it might just save a fair amount of time when dealing with, e.g., a page's worth of references.

No, that wouldn't work. This feature lets you copy what you see in the browser window a an attachment -- a pdf or a webarchive. What you were copying before was a webarchive (the links would be live in Bookends or in a browser, so you could still get to any linked pdf).

Sorry to keep rabbiting on about a pet topic, but there are a couple of other problems with input from CiteULike that it would be wonderful to see remedied along with page numbers and the checking for duplicates:

When there are multiple authors, authors other than the first are ignored;
When the item is a book, the publisher is ignored.

As you've probably realised by now, I don't have a clue how big a job this would be, but I thought I'd better let you know.

It looks to me like the author problem lies in the CiteULike COinS output. Likewise, the publisher is not included in their output. These are issues with CiteULike, not Bookends.

I've contacted the CiteULike developers and we'll work it out. I suggest that any further issues with Bookends and CiteULike that might arise be discussed directly, off-forum (support@sonnysoftware.com).
