10.6.1 does not launch! PANIC!!

I downloaded 10.6.1 from within 10.5.?. After "install and relaunch" nothing happened. Now when I try to start 10.6.1 nothing happens. OSX 10.5.7 and intel core duo. What should I do? Now I don't have access to my references. I am terrified after having been a happy user for a long time. I did not copy the previous version so I am stuck with a submission deadline one month from now. My license was bought for 10.0.3.
