Citation import window problem

Post by pharaoh »

Dear List members,
I am a former user of Notabene, so I passed to the MacWorld quite recently. I have however, a considerable problem with importing. Importing from JSTOR, but I believe that the the same is with any other web capture, I have the following problem. As I capture the onscreen reference, after logging in JSTOR, the 25 citations appear garbled on my screen. It seems the space between each line is so reduced that each citation overlaps (please see attached file)
I have tried to move Bookeend10 preferences, but no improvement has happened. Should I try re-install Bookends or is the problem not connected with it, if anyone has experienced something similar.
I have also to say that I am not able to do a JSTOR search using Online search, but only going to the JSTOR and then logging in. I understand that I have to use an IP address authentication, but my University of Birmingham server is authenticated through personal username and password, an IP authentication is not needed anymore, so the only solution is going through JSTOR, and then logging in with my institutional account.

Just as technical information, I am using MacOs 10.5.7.

Any help warmly appreciated

Hi,

The tiny text problem was fixed in a silent update. Please download Bookends 10.6.1 again and see if it's fixed for you, too.

The next official update release isn't too far off.

BTW, IP authentication is usually preferable to name/password. I'm surprised your university IT department doesn't support it for on campus use.

Dear Jon,
thank you very much for your help. Downloading and reinstalling Bookends has done the trick. About IP authentication, my university had a lot of problems setting the proxy server for off-campus use a few year ago that it has preferred to give about IP authentication altogether, as passing through username and password also authenticates the IP address. In fact my university uses: https://shibbolethidp.bham.ac.uk/ for doing its connections, which seems to overcome any problem of IP authentication. It would be nice that I could just search JSTOR from the online search bar, but it seems that it cannot be the case.

Thank you again,

Roberto

ip authentication is enforced by JSTOR, not me. I've asked them for help several times so that people using direct access to JSTOR (not HTTP via browsers) can use a password/id, but they weren't very helpful. Perhaps if you (and others in the same situation) write to them about this they'll help...

Another work around might be to establish a VPN connection to your university network with the Cisco client – this works well for me…

The VPN client lets others think you're connecting from the ip address of the university, even if you are off-campus. I think the problem here is that the university doesn't have a license with JSTOR that allows ip authentication. pharaoh, please correct me if I'm mistaken.
