Javascript not enabled in JSTOR?

Post by CTurner »

Dear Jon,

I'm trying out the Bookends Browser as a way into my university server system to access JSTOR (UNC at Chapel Hill). Everything works well until I get to the page where citations can be selected and downloaded. These are buttons of various options: BibTex, Endnote, RefWorks, email. But there is a warning on the page that tells me that javascript is not enabled so I can't access any of these buttons. No drop down/right click help there either.

Is this javascript situation part of how Bookends is set up for use? I checked in prefs but don't see anything that looks helpful with this.

Can you advise with this?

Much thanks,

Yes, that's right. Bookends disables Javascript for JSTOR because it screws up the ability to answer the copyright warning.

HOWEVER, you do not need js for JSTOR, and you shouldn't be using the "send reference to anyone" option. Bookends has a data detector for JSTOR references. It's the little green icon that lights up when you're on a JSTOR page with references. Click it an you'll see the reference titles and checkboxes. Check the ones you want and then do a direct import, with the bonus that you can also download and attach the pdf at the same time.

Thanks, Jon.

However, only the citation can be downloaded (and the series title only gives me a url?). Attempting to download the PDF does not seem to work, I've tried a couple of times.

Is it possible for Bookends to detect a PDF but not get it?

Thanks,
Craig

I'm not sure what you're doing. Here's what I did.

1. Online Search -> JSTOR
2. Search for 'test'
3. Got 10 hits
4. Clicked on the web toggle
5. The reference "The aerobiology of an environmental test chamber" shows in the lower pane (Bookends browser).
6. The green data detector icon is visible in Bookends. Click it.
7. A sheet appears listing this reference, and I check it.
8. And "Import" bevel button at the bottom gives two choices: I choose "Import Ref & PDF" to database.
9. The reference is import and the pdf is downloaded and attached to it.

I hope that is explicit enough that you can reproduce it. If you still have problems, please contact tech support off-forum (support@sonnysoftware.com).

Jon,

I apologize: in looking over my posts, I realize I wasn't explicit: I'm off-site, trying to get in to the UNC system to do all of this.

So I've been using Bookends Browsing in online search (offsite I can't get access through the standard "JSTOR" selection: "There are no matches"), and that is where I've got the problem with downloading PDFs, though as I say I can get to citation material.

I'm trying to find out about UNC's proxy server and will attempt to see if that, when plugged into prefs, gets me the PDF access I'd like.

Jon,

In Bookends Browser, I am using the sequence you outline.

Direct download of pdfs from JSTOR requires ip authentication. You won't be able to get pdfs unless you are on campus or using a VPN client. HOWEVER, if you can get to the reference and see the pdf, you can always download and attach it by drag and drop of the pdf proxy icon (in Bookends Browser -- it's the dotted square).

Sounds like this is one place where Zotero still has an advantage. You can enter your JSTOR (or any other) proxy in preferences, and Zotero automatically changes the regular URL to the proxy URL so you can download PDFs instantly along with the citation.

Perhaps. Bookends does support EZProxy. But no matter what it takes to get to JSTOR in Bookends Browser, it takes just a second to drag and drop the pdf proxy icon onto the database window to import and attach it.

I got into my university's library search page (UMass Amherst) in the BE online search, signed in for subscription access, and I am trying to drag and drop a JSTOR file. When I drag the dotted square, I get to the reference form, but when I fill in the data and press "search," it thinks for a minute and then nothing happens--the "import" button stays inactive, and I can't get the file into my database. What do I need to be doing so that drag and drop works?

You need ip authentication to get direct searches of JSTOR to work (password/id won't do it). I'm not sure exactly what you're doing from your description, but I'm guessing that's the issue. If not, you can contact tech support directly and supply screen snaps of what you are doing so I can be sure (support@sonnysoftware.com).
