Attach multiple files to new references in one step

Post by tom »

Hi,

I understand that this new feature (BE 11.0.5) can be helpful for importing a bundle of files to new references. But how can I import multiple files to one (existing) reference (like it was before the case: multiple files were attached to one ref). For example, I have a reference with its pdf downloaded several weeks ago, and now I want to attach supplementary files (11) to this ref. Can I do this in one step as it was possible before?

Thanks,

tom

That's not possible now, you have to drag them individually. If you'd like the older behavior I'm open to suggestions on how to restore it (e.g. hold down the Shift and Command key when performing the drop).

yes, that would be nice. Shift-command would be OK for me. Nowadays nearly all articles have supplementary files (at least in my working field). Its quiet often that I have multiple files belonging to one reference.

I just want to add my two-cents that the previous functionality needs to be returned in some way. Just like Tom, my references very often have multiple supplementary files that need attaching (sometimes 10 or 20...). I just went to attach three files in the same way that I was doing for the last several years, and suddenly I had four duplicates of the original reference! It seems like such a major change in how the program works should require pressing some key-combination (i.e, hold Shift-Command while dragging multiple files creates new references), rather than that be required of the way that has been the standard since I've been using the program.

Luckily, as opposed to the competition, I feel rather confident that Jon will have some kind of fix in the near future...

Thanks,

Todd

Hi,

Don't worry, it's on my list of things to add in the next update.

Update: It's done. In the next update hold down the Command key when doing the drop. Bookends will offer to attach each file to the same reference, not to new references. I'm open to discussing which should be the default behavior and which should require the keyboard combination, but for now I'm adding the keyboard combination to restore the old behavior.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the update, it works fine. Just in my opinion the default behavior should behave the same way like you drop one file. The way it works for one file (attach file to reference xxxxx, with "Attach this file to a new reference and autocomplete" as an option) should also work for multiple files.

That would certainly be easy to change. Anyone object?
