Is there a way to NOT have the search box begin searching before I finish typing?
I am a fairly fast typist, but if I am looking for "Steinberg" it often starts searching when I have gotten to the fourth letter and present the results. The problem for me is that I will have kept typing and instead of remembering what I typed, the search will skip to adding the next letter it recognizes.
So my search for "Steinberg" becomes a search for "Steirg" or "Steing".
Perhaps the problem is that I have iTunes, Devonthink Pro, Word, Firefox, and who knows what else running at the same time?
I know how to find the other "Find" menu (command+F), but I would love to just be able to use the search box and have it start searching only when I press "Enter". Is that possible?
I am running the most recent version of Bookends, with the most recent version of Snow Leopard.
Thanks!
Question about the search box
Re: Question about the search box
Hi, I'm not able to reproduce this on my system. Having said that, try unchecking "Use WebKit to display pdfs" (action popup menu) and see if that solves the problem for you.

Re: Question about the search box
Thanks for the quick response, Jon.
Unchecking the "Use Webkit..." option doesn't seem to make much difference.
What does seem to make a small difference is closing a bunch of programs. I think my system was just getting overworked.
But the core issue remains, which is that I think this search box must be a form of "live search"? That is, it will search for something once I begin entering text, regardless of whether I press "return/enter". I don't think my problem would ever occur if the search only began after pressing "return/enter". I now notice that I can have similar problems in other programs (e.g. Devonthink Pro), which suggests to me that this is a Mac issue or "feature".

Re: Question about the search box
Hi,
Live search is a very nice feature (IMHO) that works very well, and I won't be converting it to a "dumb" search that requires a return. If you're having the problem with live search in more than one app, it certainly sounds like some process on your Mac is interfering. Try rebooting in safe mode (Shift key held down) and launch Bookends. Does the live search glitch persist?

Re: Question about the search box
I will second the issue. I had a MacBook that I thought I was overtaxing. However, I recently upgraded to a MacBook Pro and on a clean system install I find that the search box is not recognizing all my key inputs. So, if I want to type "Firefox," I get "firox."
Re: Question about the search box
Did you uncheck "Use WebKit to display pdfs"? Have you tried closing the lower pane in the window? Have you tried rebooting in safe mode? Since I cannot reproduce this on any Mac I have access to, and there are very few reports filed about this, I think there are system-specific issues behind the problem.

Re: Question about the search box
Sorry Jon, I should have been more clear. I did try the troubleshooting tips you posted here and in other threads, to no avail. It is less noticeable on the new MacBook Pro, but it does persist. I did a clean install of all my software, no migration of old settings, etc..
Re: Question about the search box
If you can send me a video of the list view window while you type in the live search box and experience this (support@sonnysoftware.com).
