APA - All authors in first reference

Post by brownstudy »

Hi all -- please forgive the newb question and refer me to the appropriate forum post if this has been addressed.

Accd to APA 5 style, if an article has multiple authors, they should all be named on first reference. The following is copied from the Purdue OWL reference site (http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/03/) :

A Work by Three to Five Authors: List all the authors in the signal phrase or in parentheses the first time you cite the source.
(Kernis, Cornell, Sun, Berry, & Harlow, 1993)

In subsequent citations, only use the first author's last name followed by "et al." in the signal phrase or in parentheses.
(Kernis et al., 1993)

What do I need to fiddle with in Bookends so that this happens in the final scan? Right now, on first reference, I get the "et al." appearing when I am expecting to see all the names.

Thanks!

Hi,

The Secondary Order field in the format (if non-empty) will be used the second time a reference is cited. It has options for handling names differently from the Primary Order.

Thanks! Totally didn't see that option.

I'll fiddle with the tokens and see what happens.

I see the secondary order but know how that is related to the issue. For the first citation I too receive et al and need it written out on first citation. My issue is not with the secondary order but primary.

For APA 5th, the first citation is set to use et al. if > 5 authors. If you want all authors listed the first time, you should turn "et al." off.
