Improved Bookends Server?
Improved Bookends Server?
Hi, just tried out the Bookends server, and I see that it really requires some effort to get it going! It would be great if it was set up to work straight "out of the box". I mean that you could go into options, turn on the server, and upon connecting you'd get an interface that is on par with the regular GUI (in terms of functionality at least). By default it would be good to at least see the Bookends groups, and be able to search for references and get attachments. Probably a pretty big undertaking, but just thought I'd throw it out there. Thanks.
Re: Improved Bookends Server?
Hi,
Did you use the default files and instructions we provide in the folder "Serve databases in 5 minutes (or less) Bookends"? We provide a default.html search page that should get you up and running very quickly.
Bookends Server is not intended to mimic a Bookends database, hence no access to groups. It's meant to share your references (and pdfs, if you want) with others. The User Guide has detailed instructions on how to create HTML links that return files (pdfs). You can pretty much copy and paste out of the docs to get this working.
There are an infinite number of ways users may want to set up Bookends Server, most much more sophisticated than anything I could do. But getting the basics working (searching your database over the Internet, retrieving reference info) really takes only 5 minutes (or less), and adding links to pdfs, given the info in the User Guide, shouldn't take much longer. Having said that, setting up a nice web page, perhaps with CSS, will take more effort.
