search for an author with initials

Post by kunze »

Hello, does anyone know how to search for, or make a group for, and also with initials? For example, “Smith JR" but not “Smith A". I have searched everywhere and could not find a way to do this except with REXED searches. Is there a simpler and and way to do this?

Hi,

You could do a Find (Command-F) for the *characters* Smith JR and then make a group from that. You could make a smart group this way as well. Is that what you're looking for?

Dear Jon,
When I search for the characters Kunze, W. A. in authors, the following reference (inter alia) which should not be there is included:
Buniel, M.
Wisnoskey, B.
Glazebrook, P. A.
Schilling, W. P.
Kunze, D. L.

Kunze, D. L. is not me and other authors have W. and A. as initials. So it looks that I can't separate my papers from others with a similar surname if other authors share the same initial. !?

What kind of search are you doing, a Find or a Live Search? And when you say say "search for the characters" what does that mean -- those are the characters you've typed in, or you selected "characters" from the Find popup menu or are using quote marks in the Live Search box?

Well in the control F search search is for TEXT, then "characters" then I typed in Kunze, W. and still go got Kunze, DL references. This is what I assumed you meant when you suggested a character search. Of course Kunze, W. are also characters, I acknowledge that. It doesn't matter if I search for "words begin with" " whole words" "characters" I usually get the unwanted references as well. It doesn't help to use quotation marks e.g. "Kunze, W."
So I am stuck.
