Hi
Sorry if this is a newbie question, but I am trying to find a way to have in repeated footnote citations only the surname of the author to appear. My default style is Chicago 15th A. I have looked in the "formats manager" but see no clear way to accomplish this. Thanks in advance

Author surname only in repeated citation
Re: Author surname only in repeated citation
In the format definition, there is a secondary order field. That will be used the second (or later) time the same reference is cited. There is a popup menu option to have only the surname output the second (or later) time.

Re: Author surname only in repeated citation
Hi Jon
I have done this, but the problems, as I have discovered, seems to be related to the tick box on the far left of the database. When this is unchecked the surname only element works, but when the document is scanned each reference in the document becomes checked again and the full name appears again in subsequent citations. BTW, this is a database imported from Endnote.

The check mark means that the reference is in the Hits List (marked). When you scan a document all references cited are added to the Hits List (so you can, for example, easily make a group of references in a paper you are working on).
I don't really understand the problem you are having, there may be a misunderstanding of how this feature works. Please contact tech support off-forum (support@sonnysoftware.com) with a small example ms and database, and the format you are using (so 3 files, all zipped) and I'll do the scan here. Tell me what you want it to look like.
