Importing EndNote 7 and 8 Files without XML file

Post by revans »

I have just updated my Mac from 10.6 to 10.7 (yes, I know, I'm on the "trailing edge") and now my old copy of EndNote 8 won't run. (It was a PowerPC application.) That's not a big deal, except that I do occasionally open an old EndNote library from a previous project to look for a reference. I can no longer do that.

Is there a way to import EndNote 7 and 8 files directly into Bookends without first exporting them from EndNote as XML files? Obviously, I should have exported all of the EndNote libraries I thought I might want to use, but I didn't, so now I need a way to import them without exporting an XML file from EndNote.

I tried searching the forum using terms such as "Bookends," "EndNote," "import," "export," and such, but apparently the results exceeded the limit allowed for search results.

Thanks.

Thank you for your prompt reply; however the problem is that I can no longer run my old copy of EndNote because it is a PowerPC app and I didn't export my EndNote libraries before upgrading my Mac and losing the ability to run PowerPC apps. What I need is a way to import EndNote's ENL files to BookEnds without using EndNote. Is this possible?

Thanks.

No, it's not. You'll have to find a PPC machine, or get a friend who still has a PPC machine to export the references for you. If you're at an institution, the IT people will no doubt either have an old machine lying about or know who does.

I suspected that was the case. Thanks for you the answer, and don't worry, I'm not going back to EndNote!

That suggests another solution. Download the EN demo and open the old library with it (it's fully functional for 30 days). Export from the EN demo as XML and import into Bookends.
