how do I add multiple citations at once?

Post by drwagner »

I want to add several citations at once. I find each one and click the checkboxes next tothem. Then I look for a way to select the checked citations so I can add them. I don't see a way to make this selection without panning back through the list and finding each one manually. Is there a way to copy the checked citations?

No. You select the ones you want (no checkbox), then use Command-Y. Or do them one at a time and them post-edit in Word, placing a semicolon between them in the text:

{temp cite1; temp cite2}

This also works:

{temp cite1}{temp cite2}

with no space between the citations.

What I'm looking for is a way to enter multiple citations at once. Selecting them is not helpful if I have hundreds of citations I need to search through. Example: I search 1975 and pick one of 15 references from 1975. I click the checkbox. Then I search for the author Cole. I pick two of his 47 papers. Check check. Now I need Dinter's 1931 article. Search, check. I have four papers checked, but none are selected, because during the searching process I've had to click on various citations, which messes up my prior selection if I'm relying a control-clicking to make multiple selections. Now, I want to insert the four checked citations.

Entering them individually and post editing isn't a great option. For one thing, it's tedious. For another it's error prone. (And why aren't multiple consecutive insertions treated as a group automatically?) :x

A good solution would be to add an option to select all checked citations. (Being able to easily uncheck all citations, with a keyboard shortcut, would also be very useful in this case). Call it a feature request. :lol:

As a follow-on: what exactly are the uses of checking citations? I only see options to mark and unmark, but no additional functionality related to these check boxes.

Oh, another possibility would be if the citation list could be ordered by wether they are checked, then I could select that way. Again, lack of functionality related to these checkboxes leads me to wonder what good they are.

Marking references is very useful. It adds them to the hits list, which you can then use for many things (create a bibliography, export, etc.).

If you really want to had dozens of citations at once, here's a simple way:

1. Hits -> Clear Hits List.
2. Mark the dozens you want to cite.
3. Click on the Hits group in the group pane -> you see all the marked references.
4. Select All (Command-A) and press Command-Y.

As for mark all/unmark all, there are easy ways to do that. The one I prefer is to hold the shift key down when clicking on a checkbox. That sets all the references in that view to same value. Similarly, doing this when multiple references are selected, all the selected references will be set to that value.

Ah yes, now there's the answer. Thank you. This shift-click tip is very useful.
