Citing a single volume of a multi-volume work

Post by WAmin »

Hello friends,

I am a new Bookends user and wish to cite a single volume from a multi-volume work. For example, in the work that I do, I have to use Arabic texts which are spread over many volumes, but the particular quote I wish to cite is in vol. 4 of a 10 volume work. In the "Book" category I notice that there are fields for "no. of volumes" and "volume". Could someone kindly tell me how I can cite the work and only refer to volume 4?

Many thanks in advance.

You can put 4 in the Volume field. Then, in the format, use "v" to indicate you want the volume number placed at that point:

a. t. $Vol. $v.

might result in something like

Smith, AA. The world at large. Vol. 4.

Ok, but what if on the next occasion I cite the same multi-volume work and the reference happens to be in volume 9? Surely the system doesn't require me to input all ten volumes as separate references in the database... that would be tedious!

Yes, it would require that. As far as Bookends is concerned, the references are different (you can't have the same reference in volume 4 and volume 10). You can put literal text at the beginning and/or end of a citation like this:

{temp cite\, Vol. 4\}

or

{temp cite\, Vol. 10\}

But if the text (in this case the volume #) is in the middle of a citation, only information in the reference itself can be used.
