A different(?) question regarding Repeated Citations

Post by Cassady »

Hello All,

Anyone know what exactly BE12 looks for, in order to be able to apply the "For Repeated Citations Use______" field?

By this I mean, if I have the following references:-

Fn 1) {Du Toit et al blah blah 213}
Fn 2) {Du Toit et al blah blah 214}
etc.

In the above scenario, BE12 correctly replaces FN2 with ibid or whatever I have selected.

But what about the following situation:-

Fn1) {Du Toit et al blah blah 213}. For a contrary argument, see {Blaauw & De Vos blah blah 1092}.
Fn2) {Du Toit et al blah blah 214}

Presently, BE12 also changes the latter fn2 to ibid - however, I would not want this behaviour, since whereas {Du Toit} was cited in fn1, technically, there was a 2nd reference {Blaauw & De Vos} between {Du Toit@fn1} and {Du Toit@fn2}...

I hope I am making sense. Is there a particular manner in which I might need to organise {Du Toit} and {Blaauw & De Vos} in fn1, in order for BE12 to "see" the intervening reference, and thereby NOT apply ibid to fn2?

Any ideas?

Bookends shouldn't apply Ibid. if there is an intervening citation. You should contact tech support, with a document containing the two footnotes you mentioned (and no more) along with your format and database.

Thanks Jon.

If that is the case - then it will be a settings-issue my side. I will play around some more. If the problem persists, I will do as suggested.

I have a related question.

When FN1 has two or more citations, it is stylistically incorrect for FN2 to have IBID. However, currently (newest versions of BE and MEL) if the last citation (FN1) is the next cited (FN2), it will format with IBID.

Any way to correct this behavior? Or must these be manually sorted.

Thanks,

Rob

Bookends doesn't know if a citation is in a footnote of the body of the text. If the first citation is in a group, Bookends won't use Ibid for the following (same) citation. If it's a standalone citation, though, Bookends will use Ibid even if the next citation is in the subsequent footnote.
