You will not be able to swap field between the tabs. However, you can of course rename any field you want in the main tab and, if there's nothing special about the field, use it as you like. For example, you could rename User4 to, say, Language, and in the Addition Field tabs rename user7 to something else (or nothing at all). As long as the field has no particular functions assigned to it (e.g. the DOI field has special properties) that works just fine. You would of course have to adjust any formats to use the newly assigned fields for whatever content you want there.

Where in Prefs can we change the editing window so it resembles the stand-alone one (which is sorely missed)? I don't see anything in Refs that relates to editing windows?

You can edit the names of the fields in preferences. You can't change the layout.

Jon,

I was referring to your earlier mail

"You're not looking at the reference edit pane, you're looking at the Concise View. The ref edit pane in the main window is identical to what you see in the standalone window. Go to Preferences and tell Bookends to edit references in the main window. Now double click on a reference --that's the edit reference pane."

So where in Prefs do I tell Bookends to edit references in the main window?

That was for Bookends 12.2.4 and earlier, not Bookends 12.5.

Does that mean we are now stuck with the tiny window on the right with all the scrolling that comes with it to do our editing. In what sense is that an improvement?
