If you ever import reference metadata from Google Scholar, please see this tip in Announcements.

I assume we have to use Safari so a cookie is set that BE's browser can read? Does it matter if we are logged into our Google account or not?

Your guess is as good as mine -- I set it with Firefox first, and that didn't affect Bookends. Then I did with Safari and the output Bookends received now included the information it needed. Perhaps it's that Bookends uses WebKit, like Safari. And as far as I can tell it doesn't matter if you're logged into Google Scholar or not.
