Bookends not downloading properly or opening in High Sierra

Post by pprofpopp »

Just in case any Forum people have found an answer here.

Jon has been diligently trying to help me here but no success so far.

I upgraded to HS and downloaded the new upgrade to BE, BUT, I can't install or open it. Jon says almost certainly a MAC permissions issue.

So far I have:

Rebooted/restarted.
Installed/BE on various browsers
Run 'Disk utility permissions.
Double checked all 'folder permission' everywhere and set all I could find for everyone listed to 'read & write
Ran the terminal command diskutil resetUserPermissions / `id -u` that I found on Apple support
Re-installed HS

Googled for info advice on App.installSupportFolderItems High Sierra, but no luck. Really missing my BE. If anyone has found a fix, much appreciated
Cheers and best wishes,

Philip

Your message is a bit confusing. You can download the DMG fine? Can you open the DMG and drag bookends to /Applications? What specific error message do you see?

Have you tried creating a New User in System Preferences, logging into that account and trying to install and run it there? Have you tried removing the apple quarantine flag (open your terminal, type in "xattr -d com.apple.quarantine " then drag Bookends.app to terminal and press enter)?

BE12 and 13 both work fine for me under a recently upgraded 10.13.1 iMac and 10.12 Macbook Pro

Thanks Landol.

Yes, DMG file downloads OK but as soon as I double click to o-en it, error message appears saying 'email report to developer' and can't install/open BE

Jon says error report shows that BE can't install support folders:

App.installSupportFolderItems

Bookends is trying to install the support folders, but it can't. This is a classic permissions problem.

I'll try the 'new user' route and see if I can install open BE that way for "all users" and get back

Tried adding xattr -d com.apple.quarantine to Terminal followed by drag and drop the BE app from 'Applications' folder and enter, but nothing happened.

Back later and thanks for help

Hi Landon, Jon and forum,

This is like the twilight zone

I did create a new user. Logged out of my usual one and into it

Downloaded BE and installed and it WORKED. I didn't import my refs library as it's up in dropbox etc but BE looked to be working. Let me create a new Lib, import some new hits etc

SO....if it's the same MAC OS for all users, I must have a programme or app or whatever on my main user account that is messing things up or clashing with BE's installer or whatever.

Question now is how do I find what this clash or cause is? I have so many apps/programmes in use that I couldn't uninstall them all and then add 1 at a time to 'trial and error' test. I'd be dead by the time I finished :-) Is there any great software etc out there that will identify these kinds of clashes?

Having BE on a 'second' user account is fascinating but for ease of everyday use, I really want it to work with my main user account. Thanks a lot as ever

Cheers and best wishes,

Philip

If it's some process that is interfering (like, say, an anti-virus app), rebooting in Safe mode (Shift key held down) might help.

Hi Philip, yes having a separate account just for Bookends isn't very useful  , but it did confirm the problem is with your user account. Jon's suggestion to test with safe mode is a good one.

I don't think it is an application clash (don't go uninstalling lots of apps yet), but there must be some problem with your user Library folder somewhere (I assume you've already gone through checking all the read/write/execute permissions in your Library folder?)

Though I consider it largely snake oil, if you've tried everything else you could try Onyx: https://www.titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html —I know of several macOS users who've "fixed" some problem with it, it is free and regularly maintained.
